In this special period, Iain Riley, the foreign principal of LYBS has been paying close attention to the change of the new coronavirus epidemic. As a foreigner, Mr. Riley has been in China for more than ten years. There is no doubt that he has regarded Shanghai as his "second hometown".
"Why did you stay in Shanghai?""What is China's view on the measures taken to prevent the spread of the epidemic?" "What did you do in the meantime?" media mainly asked these questions and record the answer of the principal Iain.

“I originally went back to Scotland in the UK on 17th January but quickly realised with the rising number of cases in China that I wanted to return back to Shanghai. I had originally planned to return during the middle of February but managed to get back in the last few days of January before many of the flights were cancelled to mainland China.
One of the main reasons I came back early is that Shanghai has been my home for over 10 years, and I wanted to be here to help in any way I could. The other reason is I am the Western Principal of a large Bilingual School with mostly Chinese students. The people of Shanghai and China have given so much to me personally that I thought I needed to give something back or even just be here to show my support.”
“The school has been fantastic in supporting not only its staff but also its students and parents; both academically and emotionally. Teachers have been in contact with students on a daily basis to check on their welfare and ensure that everything is okay. Our expat teachers have also been publishing their stories about living in Shanghai on our official school account which has not only been well received by our parents but by the wider community too.
Personally, have been trying to support members of my community by handing out additional hand sanitisers and wet wipes that I brought back from the UK. I will also be volunteering next week for a company that plans to hand out masks to the public.”
Although the school haven't began as usual, and many things have not yet recovered from the epidemic, teachers are in place at home to carry out distance online learning for all students in the school. At this time, if you take a look at the road to work and observe everywhere, you will see that the city is slowly returnin to life. With more and more pedestrians on the street, more and more cars on the road, more and more shops and coffee shops, the vitality of Shanghai will gradually bloom.
