提及IB(國際文憑組織)或許不少家長已經不再陌生,但當談到“IB課程協調員”這個職能時,或許不少人并不知道,如果一所學校想要實踐IB教育理念,IB課程協調員起到不可或缺的作用。作為上海燎原雙語學校的高中國際課程助理校長、DP協調員Prachi Gupta,正如同曾經自己從老師身上所受到的鼓勵一樣,激勵著一位又一位學生,走向國際舞臺。
語速很快、愛開玩笑、戴著寬大的眼鏡留著一頭齊肩卷發,如果你在燎原雙語學??吹揭晃恍θ菘赊涞膰H教師,那多半就是IB課程協調員Ms.Gupta老師了。
Speaks quickly, likes joking, wears wide glasses and has shoulder-length curly hair. If you see a smiling International teacher at Liaoyuan Bilingual School, it's Ms. Gupta, the IB Diploma Programme Coordinator.
高中國際課程助理校長、DP協調員Prachi Gupta
在近期的IB認證官線上訪校中,她在協調團隊**中起到了關鍵性的作用。Ms.Gupta與總校長Antony Geralis,國際課程班的校長和老師,以及學生、家長一同完成了最后一次的IB認證訪談,這意味著不久的將來,燎原雙語學校將成為一所擁有IB PYP,MYP和DP項目全認證的一貫制學校。
During the recent IBDP verification virtual visit with two very experienced IB educators, she played a key role in coordinating the LYBS team. The IB educators virtually met with the Head of School, Mr. Antony Geralis, the English Division Principals and teachers, as well as students and parents, which means that in the very near future, Liaoyuan Bilingual School will become a full continuum IB world school offering the three very prestigious IB programmes - IB PYP, MYP and DP.

"Looking back on my educational experience now, in a way the philosophy of IB education has influenced me long before I was exposed to it. "When Ms. Gupta was a high school student, how could she have imagined that she, who has an MBA in Finance, would eventually become a teacher and IB Diploma Programme coordinator and accept this as the ultimate career path in her life?

交“走心”的老師朋友
父親是公務員,母親是全職媽媽,家中三個孩子排行老二的Ms.Gupta從小在一個溫暖的港灣中成長。相較要承擔家庭責任的大姐,及萌動年齡的弟弟,她在初中年齡有更多時間探索自己的興趣和喜好。
With a father being a civil servant and a mother a housewife, Ms. Gupta, the second oldest of three children in her family, grew up in a warm and welcoming environment. She had more time to explore her interests and preferences at junior high school than her older sister, who had to take on family responsibilities, and her younger brother, who was of budding age.
在印度一所私立學校就讀的Ms.Gupta非常熱愛校園生活,當過班長、競選過學院隊長也加入過學校的戲劇社。
Ms. Gupta, who attended a private school in India, loved school life, was class president, ran for house captain and joined the school's drama club.
“在中學時,我更熱愛運動而不是課程。但你知道印度的教育體系和中國很相似,家長們總是很關注學習成績,督促學生好好學習,還有許多考試?!癕s.Gupta說。在沒有接觸IB課程體系之前,盡管她有許多興趣,但并不知道如何去平衡學習、社團活動和社區服務的關系。
"In high school, I loved sports more than courses. But you know the education system in India is very similar to China, where parents are always concerned about academic performance, urging students to study hard, and excel in exams" Ms. Gupta said. As a student herself, and before she was exposed to the IB mentality, she didn't know how to balance her studies, club activities and community service, and as such her many interests.
教育旅途中,有一位好老師的指引是多么重要,這件事她從自己的故事中就有答案。盡管當時學校也有心理顧問,但Ms.Gupta遇到困惑時并不喜歡去那里,而是找到她的經濟學老師,一位年輕教師來談心。
How important it is to have a good teacher to guide you on your educational journey is something she has the answer for from her own life story. Although there were counselors at the school at the time, Ms. Gupta didn't like to go there when she was confused and instead found her economics teacher, a relatively young educator to talk to.
“她給了我很大鼓舞,稱贊我有天賦,只要在正確的方向努力。毫無疑問這使我成為了班級中的佼佼者,她是那種真正會關心學生情感的老師?!?Ms.Gupta聊到說:“那年我17歲,我們成為了跨年齡的好朋友”。
"She gave me a lot of encouragement and praised me for my talents, when I worked in the right direction. There is no doubt that this made me the best in my class, and she is the kind of teacher who really cares about her students' emotions." Ms. Gupta added that "I was 17 years old and we became good friends."
盡管老師的鼓舞給當時的她留下許多美好的回憶,但并未令她走上成為老師的道路,這段回憶如同一顆種子深埋在她的記憶中。
Although her teacher's inspiration left her with many fond memories at the time, it was not the reason why she decided to become a teacher, but this memory is buried deep in her mind like a seed.

從商業到教育
Ms.Gupta在學校擅長數學與經濟學,從印度孟買大學金融專業工商管理碩士(MBA)畢業后,人生出現了岔路口。正如每個家庭中,父親都會對孩子寄予厚望一樣,在商業和科學兩個領域,父親更希望她能夠從事科學**。
After excelling in mathematics and economics at school, Ms. Gupta's life took a fork in the road after graduating from Mumbai University in India with a master’s in business administration (MBA) in Finance. As in every family, fathers have high expectations for their children, and between business and science, her father preferred her to pursue a career in science.
但比起科學,她更喜歡商業廣告領域的**。如同IB教學理念中以個人為學習中心,尊重個體發展一般。父親還是尊重她自己的選擇?!八麜谖依Щ髸r,給到我建議,但并不會替我做最終的決定”回憶起父親的教育理念時,Ms.Gupta說。
However, she preferred a career in business and commerce. As in the IB education philosophy, the individual is the center of learning and individual development is respected. Her father still respected her own choices. "He would give me advice when I was confused, but would not make the final decision for me," Ms. Gupta says, recalling her father's approach.
雖然在商業和金融領域的**得心應手,但Ms.Gupta始終覺得似乎并不是自己最心動的職業發展。樂于不斷挑戰自我的她,在移居泰國之后,抱著嘗試的心態,考取了泰國著名大學易三倉教育學文憑。
Nevertheless, in finance Ms. Gupta did not feel that it was the career path she was most excited about or actually destined for. She was willing to challenge herself, and after living in Thailand for a few years, she took the plunge and obtained a diploma in education from Assumption University in Bangkok.
從那時起,她意識到做老師是她真正熱愛的事情,因為她意識到一個人的熱情和堅持可以影響年輕人的思想。2008年,Ms.Gupta和自己的孩子來到中國,一邊照顧孩子的同時一邊在北京一所知名國際學校開始了經濟學和人類學的授課,自此開啟了教師生涯之旅。
Since then, she realized that being a teacher was something she really loves, as she realized how much one person could influence young minds through their passion and commitment. In 2008, Ms. Gupta moved to China with her family and began teaching IBDP Economics and Business Management at a leading international school in Beijing while taking care of her young daughter. It was then when she began her journey as a teacher.

From subject teacher to Head of the Humanities, Ms. Gupta's educational work has expanded beyond "teaching" to include communicating with students and organizing school events. Since 2015, she has been the IB DP Coordinator and continues to teach IBDP Economics.
“終身學習者”幕后的推手
作為燎原雙語學校IBDP文憑課程協調員,Ms.Gupta的**復雜而多樣,需要她同時與行政部門、學校教師、家長和學生溝通。和其他IB協調員一樣,她被授權建立IBO和學校之間的,支持學校教師了解IB教學法,幫助家長和學生堅持課程的要求和嚴格性,同時還要做大量的行政**。這一切都在每日的校園**中,但Gupta女士非常喜歡并愿意接受挑戰。
As the LYBS IB Diploma Programme Coordinator, Ms. Gupta's work is complex and diverse, requiring her to communicate with the Administration, schoolteachers, parents and students at the same time. Like any other IB coordinator, she is empowered to establish the link between the IBO and the school, support schoolteachers to understand IB pedagogy, help parents and students persevere the demands and rigor of the curriculum, alongside a lot of administrative work. This is all in a day’s work, but Ms. Gupta thoroughly enjoys it and willingly accepts the challenge.
"我希望幫助學生實現個人的比較不錯狀態,同時我也相信,孩子們總是需要有人傾訴,當孩子有 ‘需要 ’的時候,我們有責任支持他們,而不是因為忽視而放棄這個孩子。" Ms.Gupta談到自己所接觸過的學生例子時,滔滔不絕地談起諸多難忘的經歷。
"I want to help students achieve their personal best, and I also believe that children always need someone to talk to, and when a child is in “need”, it is our duty to support them, not give up on that child by ignoring them." Ms. Gupta brings up some of the many memorable experiences she has had with students she has worked with over the years.
在教書的第二年時,學校一位輔導員找到Ms.Gupta告訴她,一位孩子的所有推薦信中,當大部分教師都抱怨這個孩子有各種問題時,唯獨Ms.Gupta沒有任何抱怨,后來當輔導員和學生聊到在學校里你喜歡什么時,這個孩子回答說“我喜歡Ms.Gupta老師的課?!?/p>
In her second year of teaching, the school counselor approached Ms. Gupta and told her that there was a student in her class that had lots of complaints from all of his other teachers. While most teachers complained about the child, Ms. Gupta had mentioned nothing alarming. When the student was asked which class he liked the most, he said “I like Ms. Gupta's class".
而那時,Ms.Gupta根本沒意識到自己做了什么特別的事,她只是讓這個孩子跟著他,給他更多的學習活動去挑戰,她發現這是一個聰明且喜歡被挑戰的孩子,只是他希望引起關注,盡管Ms.Gupta在那時,并沒意識到自己給到他多少額外的關注。
At that point, Ms. Gupta hadn’t even realized she was doing anything special. She just let this child follow her around and supported him with more challenging learning activities. In this way, she quickly found out that this was a smart child who just wanted attention, even though Ms. Gupta, at that point, couldn’t realize how much extra attention she was already giving him.
IBDP是一個需要堅持和決心的課程,學生往往容易失去信心,至少在開始的時候,直到他們找到自己的節奏。有一次,一位學生在臨近考試時直接對Ms.Gupta說自己想要暫緩一年,但憑借Ms.Gupta的判斷他并不需要。于是,Ms.Gupta與家長、學科老師溝通一同說服這位學生勇敢去嘗試,并告訴他在放棄之前先嘗試,這樣即便不如意依舊可以暫緩一年。
The IBDP is a programme that requires commitment and determination and students often tend to lose confidence, at least at the beginning and until they find their own pace. In one case, a student told Ms. Gupta directly near the exam that he wanted to take a year off, but in Ms. Gupta's judgment he did not need it. So, Ms. Gupta talked to the parents and the subject teachers and convinced the student to try, before giving up and he could still do a retake if he didn't do well.
“你猜!他考了嗎?他考出了40分的成績,而滿分是45分“Ms.Gupta激動的說。而另一位學生在畢業之后,他的媽媽和妹妹寫了一份長信對她表示感謝,他們在信中說道:”我們永遠不會忘記你在兒子心中留下的印象及你對他的支持。他在之前的學校復讀了11年級,所有老師都覺得他是問題孩子?!?/p>
"Guess what! The student that was ready to quit on himself scored a 40 out of 45," Ms. Gupta said still feeling excited. Another student that needed further learning support, after he graduated, his mother and sister wrote a long letter thanking her, in which they said, "we will never forget the impression you made on our son's heart and the support you gave him. He repeated 11th grade at his previous school, and all the teachers thought he was a child with problems".
Ms. Gupta的故事還沒有結束,她有太多的往事,當她說起這些往事時,眼神中流露出對教育和學生的熱情。一所優秀的IB世界學校離不開合適的人。成為一名IB教育**者,不是 "**",而是一種使命感。
Ms. Gupta's story is not over yet, she has so many memories of the past and when she talks about them, her eyes show her passion for education and her students. A great IB World School cannot be built without the right people. Being an IB educator is not a “job”, it’s a “calling”!
倘若燎原雙語學校正式獲得IB DP的授權,在接下來的幾周內,學校將成為上海僅有的三所同類型(雙語)學校之一,以及五所(*括國際學校)提供IB連續課程,即PYP、MYP和DP這三個連續性的IB課程,這對于提供IB教育教育理念和質量的學校而言意義重大,因為連貫系統性的課程體系,它明確地關注作為學習者和個人的學生本身。
這離不開燎原雙語學校學術和非學術人員的奉獻、堅持、韌性和專業知識,以及來自校方的決心,即使在困難時期,也要幫助實現學校的使命和實現其創始人的愿景,即教育具有探究精神和潛力的學生,無論其背景如何。
As soon as LYBS officially receives its IB DP authorization, hopefully over the following weeks, it will be one out of only three schools of the same type (bilingual) in the whole of Shanghai, and five overall (including international schools), offering the IB continuum, i.e. three consecutive IB programmes, PYP, MYP and DP, and this means a lot with regards to the philosophy and quality of the education provided with a clear focus on the students themselves as learners and individuals, as well as the community as a whole.
This is the result of the dedication, commitment, perseverance, resilience and expertise of the LYBS academic and non-academic staff and the determination of the Administration, even during difficult times, i.e. the pandemic, to help materialize the school’s mission and fulfil the vision of its founder, to educate students with inquiring minds and natural intelligence, whatever their background.
