Debate leads to deep thoughts
Model United Nations (MUN) is a movement that brings together young people from all over the world, mainly to debate current affairs regarding the safety and security of different nations and ethnic groupings around the world. The Student Unionof LYIS started its own MUN project (LYMUN) and we are excited about the recentdebate.
Vera Jin (G10-3) and her team of debate organisers(Regina, Lizzie and G9 Vera) took five days to arrange this event, the first ofits kind at LYIS. Boys and girls in different grades were invited to debate thetopic, "should students at LYIS be allowed to debate the issue of Chinese citizens carrying guns in public?". The team arguing in the affirmative (i.e. FOR the debate to be allowed) said that "... as teenagers we are mature enough to debate important matters and for that reason a debate about such sensitive issues should be allowed". The team arguing in the negative (i.e. AGAINST the idea that the debate should be allowed) argued that"discussion of these sensitive issues might lead to irresponsiblebe haviour on the part of students at our school", also mentioning that discussion of these issues make them feel uncomfortable.
The rebuttals were heated and individual members of each of the debating teams had to be reprimanded for behaviour not in line with international standards. In the end, the judges (Ms. R. Mahoney, Mr. K. Appeland Mr. A. Bouniol-Laffont) unanimously voted for the team who argued in the affirmative: the students at LYIS should be allowed to debate the matter regarding the carrying of guns. The judges explained that their reasons for choosing the winning team was rather obvious: (1) they had prepared their arguments based on facts rather than feelings; (2) they focused directly on what the opposing team had to say; and (3) they were able to express their thoughts more coherently.
All in all, the first debate at LYIS was a massive success, and the tone is firmly set for future debating at our vibrant school. We congratulate the MUN team for successfully organising their first debate.
The hard work paid off.
