“Why can’t a woman be more like a man?”, exasperated Professor Higgins (My Fair Lady) when he failed to understand the indomitable Eliza Doolittle.
Gender issues have perplexed, angered and baffled us for long. In lieu of claiming more opportunities or equality, we aim to avoid clichés and launch a reading project, in which, readers may better a knowledge and awareness of gender differences, not to examine testimony of their crystalized differences, but the causes underlying thereby, in the hope of changing the situation all the better. Given that female writers, who work with words and thoughts, have been physically, socially, economically and spiritually confined, who can guarantee male-dominant knowledge-rich books, can convey unbiased or equal ideas? Precisely, reams of books, despite females being an object of attention, failed to voice genuine females’ say, until women writers began to write themselves. Thus, literary perspective is selected as a primary means of entering the conversation of gender equality.
In this reading project, we seek to resolve:
What is the distinction between sex and gender?
How are females conditioned to perform the socially constructed roles?
How do males take gender privileges for granted?
Who painstakingly uttered her voices and rewrote Literary Herstory?
What impedes gender equality?
A self-examination with individual thinking.
In this reading project, our highlight is to engage AP students to enter the academic conversation of gender by directing a scholarly discussion: not only thinking academically while listening, but also talking academically. The schedule is as follows:
