Covid-19 was first discovered in China, Wuhan at the end of 2019, and has now become the most serious and most infectious disease in the world. It came with no warning, while people were preparing for the China new-year holiday or enjoying their vacation. I believe that few people could imagine how this ‘low-key’ disease would later become one of the most serious epidemics threatening the health of millions of people around the world. Almost every Chinese person ended up staying at home for more than two months.
Covid-19 was reported to be discovered on the 12th December 2019, and was first identified as a low-threat disease. No one, including citizens and government leaders, paid any attention on it. However, as time went by, it quickly spread and became an epidemic. For us students, we did not think that we would end up staying at home for more than three months. And when we realized that we could not go back to school and had to take classes online, I was personally afraid and nervous. I felt that this was going to directly influence our testing, including AP, TOEFL, and SAT. My classmates were also confused about the policy of testing and graduation prospects.
Eventually, the government locked down all of the factories, schools, markets and so on. I wondered when could we back to school, what should we do during this few months, and how could we review or learn? Immediately, the school switched to different softwares for online teaching to solve the immediate problem. In our school, the XiaoBao was used for online homework submission and assignment posting, and Zhumu was used for online classes.
I still remember that the first day we used the Zhumu. Every student was interested in this new studying system and paid attention to the classes. Teachers had done their job well, like reminding students and sending meeting code reminders. However, as time went by, disadvantages were showed. People started to play games during the class-time, including me, and some of them were sleeping, talking in Wechat, and even skipping the class. From my personal point of view, I realized that these classes were really important for us, and paying less attention could directly lead to low scores. However, I struggled with self discipline. I told my mom to take away my mobile phone so I stopped playing games. However, I still played games on the internet. More important, I faced a bigger problem: my lack of physical activity had left me lifeless and tired. More than ninety present of our time, we seated or lying at the bed. For growing teenagers, insufficient activity and non-standard sitting postures can cause growing malformations and even other side physiological diseases.
From the teacher point of view, I asked one of my teachers what feedback he had. His main feedback was that it was difficult to have classroom participation on the online video platform. Most of the time, the teacher was talking to a silent screen. Even when he asked a question, every one kept silent. Student did not ask questions, and some started to ignore the assignments that the teacher gave, especially reading assignments.
But are online courses really ineffective? I do not think so. During these few months, while I will not deny that I have indulged in games and distractions at the beginning, I started to change by the end. I made a mental note to force myself to listen to important classes. I think that the biggest lesson I learnt from this period was self-discipline.
